Amending return from MFS to MFJ, but only 1 of the taxpayers has already filed

I originally filed as MFS which was accepted and completely processed by the IRS. However, I have since decided to amend the return to MFJ.

My spouse has not filed a return yet, and the amended 1040-X will likely not process before the April 16 deadline. In such case, should I file an extension for my spouse since there will be no documented filing before the deadline or until the amendment is processed?

TL;DR - switching from MFS to MFJ via an amended 1040-X but only one of the taxpayers has already filed.

Amending return from MFS to MFJ, but only 1 of the taxpayers has already filed

Stop. Only the MFS return that was already filed needs to be amended if you have both agreed to file a joint return. The amended return must now include ALL of the income information and personal information for both spouses. Your spouse should NOT file a MFS return at this point or at all for 2022. That would only cause confusion and delays. You both have to agree to filing joint----does your spouse agree to the joint return?
